
 
Antique Portrait Painting on Cobweb or Spiderweb - German Art in Folio - Franz Richard Unterberger Innsbruck
Circa 1890 German portrait painting on spiderweb in folio. This painting measures 4 by 5 inches, and the book or folio is 8" X 10". A paper label inside the cover states in English and German "Painting on Cobweb, Fr. Unterberger, Innsbruck, Tirol. Franz Richard Unterberger was born in Innsbruck Austria in 1838. He studied at the Academy of Munich, with Albert Zimmerman, at Weimar, and under Andreas Achenbach at Dusseldorf. This painting is in excellent condition but has two small damaged areas. They are near the woman's shoulder and the web is torn. The colors in the painting are beautiful and vibrant and the talent of the artist evident. The earliest instances of using gathered layers of spiderweb as a canvas date back to 15th century in Bavaria. This is a quality example of a rare art form. Additional photos can be emailed.
